Ethics matter.

All of our ethical behaviors as physicians matter. But they have to begin at even the low levels. These are hard to monitor, so they depend on our own internal moral compasses. We should chart the truth and not chart to code to higher levels (a thing often encouraged by coding rules). We should speak the truth to consultants about what we did or didn’t do, and we should be honest when we make mistakes. We should pursue the best possible things for our patients even when those things are exhausting or inconvenient; or happen at 3 am on a busy shift. We are surrounded by the vulnerable, who we could easily abandon to their own devices and nobody would know different. But we are called to a higher path than that.
