You’re not alone in your frustrations. Good, and honest patients are sick of it too. Some of us do realize what is going on, and we worry – if something happens to us and we are suffering and in pain, will the doctors and nurses look at us with a jaded eye? Not a comforting thought for anyone who is truly in need of your help.

I know the feeling, there was a guy last week who said he was in withdrawal from being out of oral morphine, and his pain Fentanyl patch not working. He left angry when refused narcotic refills, rode his moped to the intersection of the highway, stopped pushed his bike on the shoulder and layed down and pretended to have a seizure (the whole thing was witnessed by a first responder), on the way to ED by ambulance he swore it was the EDs fault he had withdrawal seizures. IT WAS SO ON-TARGET FOR ALL
EMERGENCY ROOMS. WE NEED TO BAND TOGETHER AND SET SOME
BOUNDRIES FOR BEHAVIOR IN OUR DEPARTMENTS. WE DONT SEEM
TO GET THE UNDERSTANDING OR BACKING FROM ADMINISTRATION, BUT
WE WOULD BE STRONG TOGETHER. IT SEEMS ADMIN. WOULD RATHER
SIDE WITH STRANGERS FROM THE STREETS THEN THE STAFF THEY
HIRED. IT IS NO SURPRISE THERE IS A SHORTAGE OF NURSES.
WHY WOULD KNOWINGLY, SIGN UP FOR THIS DISRESPECT!

This article has been passed around our ED and everyone seems to agree that it is Right ON! The problem seems to have spiraled out of control beyond the point of return. We are loosing good doctors and nurses because of this abuse.

Dr Ed, Again, a strong piece of work. I believe this one struck more of a chord with people because it goes to some of the root frustrations we deal with day in and day out in this business. I appreciate your forthrightness to call a “spade a spade” and not have to follow the beat of a “politically correct drum major”.
