Edwin, thanks for your thoughtful article. I read it with great interest. I work in a hospital in Chicago, but in a different specialty. I’m a chaplain. We are certified, too. And sometimes, chaplain’s/minister’s certification boards are adversarial, even dictatorial, instead of collegial and supportive. I agree with your questioning of the European model of medicine that does not have certification as a part and parcel of routine, expected practice. Perhaps American professions can take a closer look at the process and rethink certification. Is it possible that certification can be recast or reset in some way? Just wondering.
