Just curious: has anyone ever had their continued employment or compensation (in medicine or nursing) tied to patient satisfaction scores, like Press-Ganey? Or has anyone’s compensation or contract been adversely affected by patient complaints? I’ve heard of it, but I’d love some stories to back up the rumors.
Certainly, some people have been fired for having lots of complaints, but has anyone experienced it as an institutional policy or contractual matter?
Even if you know someone who would be willing to tell me about it, I’d love to know. Because frankly, it’s a terrible idea!
I am currently employed as a retail pharmacist with a nationwide corporation. My continued employment is based on many factors, one of which is satisfaction as measured by “secret shoppers” (this is 50% of my evaluation). It is tremendously frustrating since thse individuals can only evaluate me based upon how they perceive my interactions with them based on OTC medications. They have NO idea if I’m giving out correct information or not – just am I nice (do I smile), do I show them where the toothpaste is & do I give them something else they might like to buy… Read more »

I am a ABEM dr who worked for years in a high volume rural ER in southern Indiana, much like your practice in SC. Although we served an 11 county area and were the only hospital within an hour’s drive, the administration was bent on the ER having 90%+ scores. Despite being the top doc in multiple parameters (door to doc time, dr to dispo time, and number of patients seen) my satisfaction scores were routinely lower than the rest of the group. Good post, we BTW use patientsurvey.com for keeping a tab on patient feedback and to improve patient care. Works out well. Makes the staff also think twice about how they treat patients. Also, this is helping out to let go staff who are not doing a great job. What better way to document something than something that is provided to you by patients themselves. Plus, all staff wears a name tag just to make sure they know patients can see who the person is. Also, doctors are now reviewing these every month as well. I am the spouse of an ER physician who belongs to a group that was terminated for low (40%ile/mean 83%) Press Ganey scores. That’s right….the entire group of 20 board certified docs, and PA’s as well, were given a 120 day notice for rtermination of contract. They are an independent, collegial group that had been providing care at this hospital system for over twenty years. They were active in the community (ACLS training, EMS support and eduction, disaster preparedness) and also participated actively in committee work at the hospital.
